Point-In-Time Homeless Count

Every January, Community Council conducts the winter Point In Time count. This is when we take a one-day "snap-shot" of what homelessness looks like in our community.

We identify the number of people currently experiencing homelessness - in our shelters, living in places not meant for human habitation, living in local motels, and on the streets. We will count the individuals, families, children, and youth who are homeless right in our own neighborhoods.

We do this in order to assess how well our programs are doing and to identify emerging needs. This one-day count is done in every community across America. The information is provided to HUD and compiled for an annual report to Congress on the state of homelessness in this country.

Volunteers assist with this activity every year. Our volunteers:

  • Assist with the street count on one specific day in January
  • Collect surveys from organizations that serve the homeless
  • Make phone calls to help gather information the week before, during, and after the count
