Five Acres Animal Shelter, formerly known as the St. Charles Humane Society, announces its new name, logo and $1 million capital campaign.
Five Acres Animal Shelter is located on Pralle Lane in St. Charles and has been helping dogs and cats find new homes since 1973. Over the years, the shelter has often been confused with animal control or other humane societies. As Board Member Kelly Backes states, “We’re tired of explaining who we aren’t.” We are the only no-kill shelter in St. Charles County and do not receive any government funding. Located on close to 5 acres, we offer a unique environment for our animals with space for them to run, play and nap.
The shelter seeks to raise $1 million to provide additional kennel space for the animals, a room for youth educational programs, and lobby. The shelter found homes for over 550 dogs and cats in 2010. The need for space at our shelter seems never ending, and we can do more. The additional building will allow us to more than double the number of animals we can house and therefore save. In addition to helping dogs and cats whose owners can no longer care for them, we also save animals from possible euthanasia at overcrowded shelters and rescue dogs from puppy mills.
